Concert in the Park

The Charleston Symphony Orchestra will be back again this year for a free Concert in Smythe Park on May 17. Mark your calendar and plan your picnic, because you won't want to miss this event. The picnic judging starts at 6:30pm and the concert begins at 7:30pm. Prizes will be awarded for the most elaborate and creative picnic spreads. For those who don't want to pack a picnic, food will be available for purchase. Ted's Butcherblock will be offering a multitude of items for sale including beer, wine by the bottle and the glass, hot sandwiches and a selection of gourmet-to-go items to add to guest's picnic menus. Tasty treats from Mr. Koolie will also be available for sale. Be sure to catch the spectacular fireworks display after the concert! Be sure to come early for a good spot.

Sundown on the Wando
Be sure to come out for the final "Sundown on the Wando", Daniel Island's riverfront, Friday after work music concert of the season. So spread the word and invite your on and off island friends, neighbors, relatives and co-workers. June 6th is the final one this year and will be held at Children's Park, located at the end of River Landing Drive. The fun starts at 5:00 pm with outstanding food and beverage catered by Dog and Duck Food and Spirits, Chick-Fil-A, and Moo-na Lisa. Also at 5:00 themed kid's activities will take place in the center of Children's Park like the mini duck drop decorating and race! Then at 6:00, get ready to catch the breezes off the river and listen and dance to the Motown sounds of Heart and Soul.

Red Balloon Yard Sale

Mark your calendars, this years Spring Red Balloon Yard Sale will be Saturday March 22. Each participating homeowner will be responsible for putting red balloons on their mailbox or porch rail to indicate they are having a sale. This semi-annual event attracts buyers from the local area all on one day. The sale will be advertised in the Town Crier, The Post & Courier, The Moultrie News, and The Daniel Island News. Remove the balloons at the end of your sale (or by 5:00 pm that day). The event will be held rain or shine.

Children's Easter Celebration
Looking for a fun activity for the kids during spring break? This isnt exactly new but here is some information on the proposed marina on Daniel Island.

A real estate company and the city of Charleston are rolling out plans to develop a major waterfront recreation area on Daniel Island that would include a large marina, boat ramp, community fishing pier and five athletic fields.
The site, which runs two miles along the Wando River on either side of the Mark Clark Expressway, would be dedicated as a "great public realm," said Charleston Mayor Joe Riley.
"This new public park will offer to everyone an opportunity to enjoy and access the waterways of the Lowcountry," Riley said.
The project is unique because property along the water "usually ends up in people's back yards," said Matt Sloan, president of the Daniel Island Co.
The city has been working on the plan for about two years with Sloan's firm, the primary developer of the 4,000-acre master-planned island between Mount Pleasant and North Charleston. They are working with Sasaki Associates, the same firm that designed Waterfront Park on the Charleston peninsula.
Officials expect to open the new park, which would incorporate the Family Circle Tennis Center, around mid-2009. They expected the permitting process to take a year.
If approved, the mostly vacant site would be transformed into a waterfront recreational mecca, anchored by a public marina owned by the Daniel Island Co. With up to 500 wet and dry slips, it would be one of the biggest boat-storage facilities of its kind in the region.
Other elements of the project include:
--A daily-fee public boat ramp positioned directly under the Mark Clark Expressway, with up to four lanes and parking for more than 100 vehicles.
--A city-maintained recreational area with three baseball fields, two soccer fields and room for a gymnasium.
--A community fishing pier at the park's northern tip.
The boat ramp and pier would be connected to Daniel Island's existing network of pedestrian trails and boardwalks.
The marina is expected to be one of the biggest draws for the island. Plans calls for 300 wet slips and 200 dry-stack units. The in-water facility will replace an existing dock that is near the island's real estate sales center on River Landing Drive.
The wet and dry slips will be rented to the general public at what Sloan described as competitive market rates. The exact prices have not been determined.
The land around the proposed marina likely would accommodate retail and restaurant uses, giving people another reason to spend time and money on the island, Sloan said.
"If we do it right, people will come by land but they'll also come by water," he said.
The automobile and boat traffic that the marina and surrounding developments would generate would benefit existing businesses on the island, said Ken Vedrinski, the owner and chef of Sienna restaurant.
"We're still perceived as a little inaccessible," he said.
The city is scheduled to begin its public review of the Daniel Island Co.'s design for the marina's dry stack building Thursday. The company also plans to file permitting plans with state environmental regulators this week.
The Coastal Conservation League, a Charleston-based environmental group, already has offered its endorsement for the project, saying that the marina would cause "minimal environmental damage."
In the past, the group has spoken out against some proposed developments because of the impact heavy boat traffic can have on marshland.
The Daniel Island development lies along a stretch of the Wando that is more than 2,000 feet wide, and the riverbanks in that area already experience a significant amount of commercial and recreational boat traffic.
"We believe the marina is a well-designed facility in an appropriate location," said Dana Beach, the league's executive director.

South End Land Plan Submitted to the City.

The Daniel Island Company has submitted a comprehensive land plan to the city of Charleston that lays out all the remaining lots for the south end of the island. This matter will be before the planning commission on January 16th. The plan includes 775 lots, open space, and an additional amenity center (pool facility) on Daniel Island Drive.
